Click here for PHOTOS Update! HISTORY The Nexus care buses campaign started 4 years ago in Newcastle, because disabled people where being threatened by unscrupulous drivers. DAN got to hear of the situation and proceeded to stop Nexus care buses at every available oppurtunities. since those days dan as changed campaigns from transport to free our people (god knows why) as transport should be included within the free our people campaign. It is for that reason that active members of birmingham dan decided to support North East DAN with their Nexus campaign. COMFORTABLY CUFFED, BUT ONLY TILL THE COPPERS GOT THIRSTY! On friday the 8th of december 2000, we stopped a nexus bus at grey monument. at first the local police were somewhat confused by three crips lying under a nexus care bus. they where more confused when we said " that we where very comfortable and perfectly prepared to stay for as long as it took ". the police were less than happy after an hour of talking to us as they hadn't had a cup of tea since they got there. After debating for some time they proceeded to cut our handcuffs with their bolt cutters and physically drag us out not caring if they hurt us or not. Sue was physically dragged backards to the police van and put into the cage without being cautioned. Then proceeded to take her to the police station where police was waiting to get her out of the van there was approx. 4 police men plus the ones in the van. I was told that because mine and my friends wheeelchair didn't fit in the van that the police would be grateful if we could push ourselfs to the police station so it would save them patrol and resources (bonnie & clyde) never had this problem. When we arrived at the police station there was a flight of steps waiting for us, how nice of them to think of us that they made sure we had a bell at the right height for us to report a crime but not able to commit a crime. COMING DOWN TO OUR LEVEL On ringing the bell at the station a officer came down to my level at the bottom of the flight of steps, ( i bet it was the first bit of exercise he had all shift) when we informed him that we where under caution ( my friend and i looked up at the officer to see him looking very confused and rather worried). So for the next fifthteen mins. my friend and i delighted passers by with storys of how an inaccessible british justice was. Sue was led out of the station by the arresting officer and escorted to the front of the station so that she didn't lose her way and cry freedom. when she got to the front of the station she waited for the copper to go by and shouted " Where dan, we are here, get use to it!" and "We will be back, we're DAN". So how are we going to get our people back out there campaigning for freedom if all we are doing is sitting on the side street and not causing chaos to other people. So come on and wake up to an active year of action. FREEDOM NOW AND NOTHING LESS!!!! By Sue and Sam. Update thought you would like to hear the outcome of the arrest : "Dear Ms Brackenbury, It has been alleged that you at Blackett Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne on the 8th of December 2000 did commit an offence of:- Obstruct/resist a police officer in excution of duty Wilfully obstruct Highway On the evidence available it has been decided to deal with the offence by means of a written warning. This matter is now finalised, however you should be aware if you commit further offences in the future, proceedings may be brought against you. Your Sincerely" Sam got a similar letter but with the charge of Wilfully obstrust highway. So far we have been let of with a written warning. We have not heard from Tom so we can't speak for him, but generally it looks like we have all been let of with a warning. Dedications:- to 'the whippet', Robin Chapman. To Ian Stanton who helped me to become all fired up, i miss him till this day and remember what he fought for. Long live his memory. |
