Thursday 16th November 2000 To think, to dream, to sleep Alone To breathe, exist to be - Alone To fight, for life Alone To have, to get, to take, Alone To know that you are alone Separated, cut, to the bone. Vender Shorter Saturday 11th November 2000 Dear Jodie, mum and dad I wanted to let you know I with other sisters and brothers have tried very hard to ensure you all had equal right to life. Sadly the courts allowed Mary to die without any consideration on how she could live and be part of your loving family. Mary did not die in vain - she was born, lived and died as a warrior, a young woman who the doctors were surprised was alive and kicking. In just three months, Mary has inspired us to follow a National Campaign for disabled peoples right to life. Mary's fighting spirit will remain central to this campaign for as long as injustice exists in this world. Jodie, welcome into our community. I am sure born conjoined to Mary, you will also have the guiding fighting spirit she had that will bring you lots of happiness, strength and love to those who you are in contact with. With love to you all Simone Aspis XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Wednesday 8th November 2000 The struggle of baby Mary has succeeded in stirring the deepest passions and emotions of many - she has challenged society. Those who campaigned to save her life, hold in their heart her memory and her legacy. But also, in their power they hold that struggle for the right to life that Mary gave rise to, the struggle she began will now be continued and someday I hope this will be a just world, free of the power of eugenics -where we celebrate life and protect our most vulnerable children. Mary achieved so much in her short life, she inspired us with her humanity and the questions she presented. She was an ambassador for all disabled children of the present and of the future. She will never be forgotten. Mary, you set a challenge for us all - now we must rise to it ... Jane (Ireland) Tuesday 7th November 2000 Goodbye Mary - your sister will always carry you in her heart. I am proud to have had you in my world, and I hope that you have taught many people that we are all equal. We will support your sister in her life ahead and campaign to make this a fairer society than the one that killed you. Love to Mary, love to Jodie from Lindsay Disabled Person UK "I am lost for words but I am sure you can feel my thoughts" Love to you both Carmelle I.D.A.G. As I cry out into cyber space You see not the tears upon my face But at the eye of these ethical storms Is strict adherence to societal norms Which state, unchallenged, ‘Mary must die’ ‘Only Jodie is viable’ went the cry And this is now the law of our land We must remove our heads from sand If I have a liver but you have more pounds or worth My liver is yours and I go to the earth What a mess, what sorrow, what evil we see When we ascribe to others more value than me Philip Scullion Senior Lecturer School of Health and Social Sciences Coventry University How safe is your unborn child tonight? Who's next? What cost is the unborn child to society? very concerned disabled couple. All lives are worth living, 'Mary' your murder is a crime against human rights and your life was worth more than most. I wish 'Jodie' strength for the enormous surgeries you will now face. We will be outside the hospital to say our goodbyes this week and to be there for 'Jodie' too. You have both inspired questions and real action about equal rights to life which will continue. clair lewis Monday 6th November 2000 In Memory of Mary, one life too many. A life worth living...
