Subject: RE Simon Hoggart

So Simon Hoggart wonders where the 8.5 million disabled people are because he couldn't see them on his train (Diary, 25 August 2001)

Ummm, well, maybe, just maybe, it might have something to do with the fact that
  1. most trains are inaccessible or just have a couple of wheelchair spaces.
  2. wheelchair users only make up a small percentage of disabled people.
  3. a lot of disabilities are not physically obvious such as epilepsy and dyslexia.
If only he could have come to this years Independence Festival in Leeds celebrating disability culture. Or perhaps he would like to come to next years Disability Film Festival organised by the London Disability Arts Forum.

He'll get to meet quite a lot of us!
